Community Spotlight is on:
YWCA of Greater Rhode Island: My Sister's Keeper Program
Mission:
To create opportunities for women's growth, leadership, and power in order to attain a common vision: Peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all people. The association will thrust its collective power toward the elimination of racism wherever it exists and by any means necessary.
Organization:
YWCA of Greater Rhode Island is part of the YWCA of the USA. We focus on helping the community with such programs as the ENCORE Plus Breast & Cervical Cancer Screening Program. The YWCA of GRI provides affordable child care services to low-income families. The "My Sister's Keeper Program" works with "at-risk" girls in middle school. This program provides the girls with both educational and recreational opportunities. The YWCA TECHGyrls program teaches girls ages 9-14 computer and technology skills. The Sarah Frances Grant Homestead Project is a work-in-progress that will provide safe housing for women.
Youth:
The YWCA of GRI has helped Hispanic parents and youth through past programs such as Luz y Vida. Luz y Vida was a HIV outreach program aimed at Hispanic youth. Our daycare center serves a primarily Hispanic population. My Sister's Keeper has worked with girls of all cultures and races. The program has provided the girls with both weekly recreational activities as well as education around self-esteem, young women's health, domestic violence and healthy relationships, teen pregnancy, and substance abuse.
Initiatives:
YWCA Rhode Island uses ¡Soy Unica! ¡Soy Latina! materials to stimulate discussions and activities about self esteem, culture, and the role of young Latina women in society.
