A Woman’s Place, St. Mary’s Hospital

Who They Are

A Woman’s Place is located in Green Bay, WI, at St. Mary’s Hospital is proud to offer a class that was inspired by SAMHSA’s Hispanic/Latino Initiative. The new class, called “I am Unique, I am Latina Class,” is free for Hispanic/Latina girls ages 10 to 12 and their mothers. It will be offered four times per year.

What They Do

A Woman’s Place seeks to improve the health of women and their families in Northeast Wisconsin by providing health education, support, and advocacy for women of all ages. They also serve as a health resource center for women and their families.

How They Do It

Their class helps girls learn and understand their physical growth and emotional process, how to improve their self-esteem, deal with peer pressure, develop healthy habits, and set goals for themselves. It also helps mothers understand the challenges their daughters face while growing up in two different cultures. Mothers learn what they can do to help their daughters build strong self-esteem and reach their goals. The class builds good relationships and encourages open communication between mothers and daughters.

How ¡Soy Unica! ¡Soy Latina! Helped

Along with inspiring the name for their program, ¡Soy Unica! ¡Soy Latina! materials have been a great resource. The ¡Soy Unica! ¡Soy Latina! materials have been a perfect match for this class because they share the same objectives, are culturally sensitive, and developed in a way that makes them very easy for the mothers and daughters to read and understand. The materials have contributed to the success of the first two classes (held February 28 and June 19 2004). The next two classes will be offered on September 25 from 3-6 p.m. and on November 20 from 3-6 p.m.
