Community Spotlight is on:
Diversity Services Program/Women in Action at Skagit Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Services
Mission:
The mission of Women in Action is to facilitate access to community resources by identifying and resolving barriers that limit service delivery to Spanish-speaking communities. We offer culturally relevant services that promote empowerment and social change and enhance personal growth and professional development to facilitate better integration into the community and labor force.
Organization:
Our organization provides information, referrals, media outreach, domestic violence, and sexual assault and substance abuse prevention services to Hispanic/Latino families. We are located at a Neighborhood Station that serves as a community resources center. We have provided services since 1998 and we are funded by HIDTA (High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area).
Youth:
We have promoted the need for a homework center after school, and it is been running for years. We have been sponsored by the SC youth and family services. We have promoted the need for driver’s education classes, GED classes, and citizenship classes, and they have been running for years. Our programs also have been sponsored by SCCAA/SKAGIR literacy programs, which have promoted the need for prevention information by radio, newspaper, and television.
Initiatives:
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s Hispanic/Latino Initiative materials help us promote making healthy choices; learning about ourselves, our cultures, and our challenges; and continuing to move forward to reach our dreams and goals. These materials are informative and motivational. The language used in the materials is very appropriate for our bilingual youth.
