La Piñon Sexual Assault Recovery Services of Southern New Mexico Prevention Program and Community Education

Who They Are

La Piñon provides a comprehensive array of services related to sexual assault and abuse to individuals and families in the community.

What They Do

They provide services for victims of sexual assault and their loved ones. La Piñon also provides counseling services, crisis intervention, assistance filing for New Mexico Crime Victim’s Reparation, forensic evidence collection (within 72 hours of a sexual assault), and community education related to prevention and intervention of sexual assault. La Piñon is dedicated to offering services 24 hours a day to all victims or survivors of sexual assault and their loved ones.

How They Do It

La Piñon provides services to the community as needed. Their prevention program provides bilingual (Spanish and English) and monolingual (English or Spanish) educational services to the community related to body safety with children, sexual harassment and drug-facilitated sexual assault towards teens, and duty to report statutes to adults. The program also attempts to create awareness in the community for every person. La Piñon has materials in a wide array of subjects in English and Spanish, and they feature a custom-made comic and coloring book in both languages, as well.

How ¡Soy Unica! ¡Soy Latina! Helped

La Piñon uses SAMHSA’s Hispanic/Latino Initiative materials in classroom or group settings, as well as in one-on-one counseling sessions, with Latinos from pre-school all the way to adults. The materials aid them in helping youth further develop their own sense of self-esteem. The Hablemos en Confianza materials and Web site help them improve communication within the family and the community.
