Community Spotlight is on:
NICPP (North Inland County Prevention Program)
Who They Are
NICPP is a program of the Mental Health Inc. that provides the community with materials and prevention services that change and modify the environment in the community. The program addresses problems that are associated with alcohol, tobacco, and drug abuse. It also alerts and educates the members in the community about the dangers and the consequences of the consumption of alcohol and illicit drugs at an early age.
What They Do
NICPP works in the prevention field to present policies that will contribute to a change in the environment of underage drinkers and young drug abusers. As a result, they work with different groups in the communities, including parents and youth groups, to involve them in bringing about change in the community.
How They Do It
Their program uses all sources available to them, from different “strategic” partners, to get our message across in our region. The percentage of Hispanics is high in this region and they recognize that materials are scarce. The materials provided by all their partners are distributed in different formats, mostly in workshops, conferences, and health fairs. NICPP tries to involve the youth in long-term programs and organizations.
How SAMHSA's Hispanic/Latino Initiative Helped
NICPP uses the activity books from SAMHSA’s Hispanic/Latino Initiative in health fairs to help attract Hispanics to their diverse programs. The bilingual materials have helped NICPP to explain in more detail the different assistance available to parents in Spanish when they themselves do not speak English but their children do.
