Mano a Mano Foundation
Providing Support and Education to the Latino Community
Who They Are:
We are a non-profit organization based in the North Coastal area in San Diego, California. We provide educational conferences to parents and students to give them the tools to succeed as parents and as students.
What They Do:
Our mission is to provide needed culturally-sensitive, Spanish/English, educational, and supportive services to Latino families throughout San Diego County. We offer skill-building support groups that help Latino parents and their children encourage and nurture family success. Mano a Mano promotes student and family involvement in school; drug, alcohol, and other substance abuse awareness and education; and parenting skill training.
Helping Youth:
We provide support and education so we can help them succeed in school and within their families. We provide information that will help them stay away from drugs, gangs, alcohol, and other negative behavior, and encourage them to stay in school and graduate.
How Has SAMHSA’s Hispanic/Latino Initiative Helped?
We have used a number of materials for the adults provided by SAMHSA’s Hispanic/ Latino Initiative in our educational conferences. We have made packages of books, handouts, and information about every single drug for the parents. They usually receive a folder with all the information that they need to have. The materials we use are mostly in Spanish, because our prevention conferences are in Spanish for the Latino Community in San Diego. We enjoy using these materials because parents have told us that the information is presented in a way that is clear, easy to read and to understand. The Hispanic/ Latino Web-site is also a wonderful resource that we use a lot.
