Community Spotlight is on:
United for Our Community
National Latino Council on Alcohol and Tobacco Prevention (NLCATP)
NLCATP is a nonprofit organization committed to combating the causes and consequences of alcohol and tobacco use within the Latino community.
NLCATP seeks to form a strong foundation in the Latino community for a better future. The group’s goals include creating family unity and stability for the benefit of future generations. NLCATP strives to decrease the overall consumption of illegal substances among Latinos.
What Do They Do?
To bring awareness to the Latino community about the consequences of using alcohol and tobacco, NLCATP participates in health fairs in conjunction with local institutions and holds educational forums in different locations, such as in schools and churches. NLCATP works to increase awareness among parents and youths about what it means to be Latino, and they emphasize their sense of pride in a culture that is very diverse and rich in tradition. Also, NLCATP helps create a united front against the problems that affect our society today, such as alcohol, tobacco, illicit drugs, AIDS, and diabetes, by working to increase their own sense of pride in their roots.
They have seen the positive results that occur when Latino parents recover after years of addiction. They have seen how this recovery strengthens the relationships they have with their spouses, their children, and their entire families. They also have observed the emotional changes in kids who have rediscovered hopes and dreams. Young people like to feel part of a group that shares their backgrounds and experiences. It makes them feel better. It is very positive for youngsters to see that, yes, things will get better.
How Has ¡Soy Unica! ¡Soy Latina! Helped This Organization?
Through the use of ¡Soy Unica! ¡Soy Latina! bilingual reading materials, NLCATP helps teach the importance of preserving this culture by inspiring deep feelings of closeness with the important people in our lives. The motivational accounts in the ¡Soy Unica! ¡Soy Latina! material are inspiring to our current and future generations. Many Latinos appreciate and highly value having received these materials.
We remind every person who receives one of SAMHSA’s Hispanic/Latino Initiative books to keep in mind all of the care that went into developing these informative materials that are so important to our community. We feel especially proud that these materials are written in Spanish and respect our culture, diversity, and customs. We should always remember to teach our loved ones the importance of being Latino, whatever part of the world they may live in.
