Community Spotlight is on:
Latinitas, Inc.
Mission:
Our mission is to provide a forum where Latina youth have a voice; to foster positive self images and empower Latina girls to accept and appreciate themselves; to inspire young Latinas to be strong, smart, and, most importantly, themselves; and to encourage cultural awareness and pride.
Organization:
Latinitas is a non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement and empowerment of Latina youth. This Web magazine started as a college classroom assignment in February of 2003. Run by two recent college graduates and several volunteers, they strive to encourage, empower, and educate yo ng Latinas to succeed. Latinitas is currently producing a webzine especially for Hispanic girls. Eventually all of their content will be available in both English and Spanish.
Youth:
"Latinitas" magazine empowers, illuminates, and validates, encouraging Latina girls to grow into healthy, confident, and successful Latinas. The magazine is a resource guide for young girls with a Latino perspective. It is a success driven-magazine featuring empowering articles, profiling Latina role models, highlighting real-life Latinitas, and providing helpful tools for success. "Latinitas" magazine brings to light the lives of young Latinas. Our magazine has pages filled with everything girls like-music, sports, movies, careers, fashion, school, relationships-all with a unique Latin flair. It provides helpful advice and relevant information to address the issues these girls are confronting. It includes fun and hip articles from a Latino perspective.
"Latinitas" is created by girls and women who are committed to the empowerment of Latina youth. It is written and edited by and for girls ages 10-14. Our staff and volunteers provide workshops to teach Latina girls writing, editing, computer, and design skills. The art and written work of Latina girls is featured within the magazine. The final product is a collaboration of girls and adults. An editorial board of girls aged 10-14 helps make editorial decisions on all material appearing in the magazine.
Initiatives:
¡Soy Unica! ¡Soy Latina! Initiative materials and Web site were a big inspiration to "Latinitas". We have used the information from Hablemos en Confianza and ¡Soy Unica! ¡Soy Latina! materials and Web sites as sources for articles.
