36th Judicial District Juvenile Probation:
La Familia Excelente Program

Who They Are:

“La Familia” is an intervention program that provides free services for youth ages 11-17 and their families. The majority of our participants (youth and their parents) are Hispanic. Funding is provided through a grant from the Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse (TCADA).

What They Do:

Our mission is to reduce substance abuse among area youth, their families, and the community. We serve a five-county rural area whose population is up to 75 percent Hispanic. If not for our program, many of the youth and families we serve would not be able to obtain these much-needed services in their own communities.

How They Do It:

Services offered include intervention screening, intervention assessment, and individual intervention counseling for youth and their parents/guardians, life skills groups for youth and their families, and intervention groups for youth.

How SAMHSA’s Hispanic/Latino Initiative Helps:

Provides resources (i.e., materials, Web content) we have used in home visits with families, small youth groups, staff training, and other services to Hispanic youth and their families.
