Community Spotlight is on:

Hispanic Committee of Virginia

Who are they?

The Hispanic Committee of Virginia (CHV) is a non profit community organization in Northern Virginia with 30 bilingual, bicultural employees from 14 Spanish-speaking countries and from the United States. Although the organization specializes in helping Hispanic immigrants, it will not deny services to anyone.

What They Do:

The mission of the Hispanic Committee of Virginia is to help Hispanic immigrants to participate and to fully contribute to American society.

Helping the Youth:

Community workers help individuals or families with limited resources in accessing services and handling crises, while at the same time encouraging them to establish long term goals and plans toward a goal of being self-sufficient. They are currently looking for mentors to join their Alianza Escolar program. Mentors work one-on-one with Hispanic children that need extra guidance to ensure their success. The children are primarily 11-14 years old and truly look forward to their time with their mentors, whether it is spent working on homework, talking about their day, using the computers, or exploring new topics. Mentors receive training before they begin, and speaking Spanish is not necessary. If you are interested or know someone who would be, contact Gretchen Schule via e-mail at EducationCoord@hcva.org.

How has SAMHSA’s Hispanic/Latino Initiative Helped?

SAMHSA’s Hispanic/Latino Initiative materials have helped Virginia’s Hispanic Committee to provide guidance and suitable information to families in need during times of crisis. The materials will be distributed in the Hispanic Committee offices located in Falls Church, Arlington, and Alexandria. They will also be handed out during special events or any other occasion that is convenient. As community workers, their mission is to offer the greatest amount of information to the community. One way they achieve this goal is by offering SAMHSA’s educational materials to their Hispanic families.
