Community Spotlight this month is on:
La Esperanza Community Housing Corporation offers programs to help prepare immigrants for a brighter future.
Who are they?
La Esperanza Community Housing Corporation is a nonprofit organization that helps the community by providing emotional support and by seeking solutions to problems most immigrants face when they arrive in the US. They also offer educational programs for the prevention of chronic disease, especially those that affect a large number of Latinas such as sexually transmitted diseases.
What do they do?
They train people with limited resources in skills that help them live a better life. The group also helps families seeking medical assistance and defends Latino families’ rights as renters while providing general information about housing.
How do they do it?
Parents are trained to act as health promoters. The group also offers extracurricular programs for children and youth and training programs to encourage motivation and self-esteem. They teach young people how to face the challenges of being in a new country with a different culture and provide information on how to prevent drinking and the use of tobacco and illegal drugs.
How has this organization used ¡Soy Unica! ¡Soy Latina!’s materials?
Young people have greatly benefited from ¡Soy Unica! ¡Soy Latina!’s wonderful educational materials. The books instruct children to listen and respect their parents. The advice offered through the materials also is of great value to parents because it can be used to teach children valuable lessons from an early age so they can grow up to be healthy, happy, and drug-free.
