The Aspira Association

The ASPIRA Association promotes the empowerment of the Puerto Rican and Latino community by developing and nurturing the leadership, intellectual, and cultural potential of its youth so they may contribute their skills and dedication to the fullest development of the Puerto Rican and Latino communities everywhere.

ASPIRA provides leadership training, career and college counseling, financial aid, scholarship assistance, educational advocacy, cultural activities, and, most important, continuing opportunities to implement community action projects. Throughout its existence, ASPIRA’s commitment to its initial mission of leadership development has remained unchanged. All programs still aim to help Latino youth develop their intellectual and leadership potential so they can achieve educational excellence and improve their own lives and that of their community.

ASPIRA and ¡Soy Unica! ¡Soy Latina! have formed a partnership! Check out ASPIRA’s excellent publication on the Hispanic population at www.aspira.org.

MANA

MANA is a 501c(3) national grassroots membership organization with chapters and individual members across the country. Founded in 1974 by Mexican-American women, the membership voted to become MANA, A National Latina Organization, in honor of the diversity of its ranks. Today, MANA advocates for ALL Latinas. MANA empowers Latinas through leadership development, community service, and advocacy.

MANA fulfills its mission through programs in two focus areas: AvanZamos® is a chapter-based, formal leadership development program for adult Latinas. The goal is to strengthen Latina community leaders through educational programs.

HERMANITAS® is a mentoring program designed to meet the specific needs of Latina adolescents. The program empowers young Latinas through education, leadership development, health and fitness, cultural awareness, and community action.

MANA provided target audience input during the development of the ¡Soy Unica! ¡Soy Latina! Web site and has distributed the ¡Soy Unica! ¡Soy Latina! activity books during its National HERMANITAS® Summer Institute.

 Mentoring

State Mentoring Resource Center(MSMRC) seeks to strengthen the quality and broaden the base of caring adult/youth relationships, building upon the growing experience of mentoring programs across the State and the Nation. It has received national acclaim for its efforts to develop a wide selection of program models that fit students who are served and the caring adults who are connected to them. In 2001 MSMRC expanded its service delivery by adding mentoring and youth development training institutes. MSMRC’s training institutes work to promote “excellence in mentoring” across all sectors.

MSMRC has invited ¡Soy Unica! ¡Soy Latina! to present our materials at workshops and trainings for mentors and mentor program coordinators. This partnership helps to promote the positive development of young people and the caring adults in their lives.

Mentoring

Since 1990, MENTOR/National Mentoring Partnership (MENTOR) has been leading the movement to connect America’s young people with caring adult mentors. As an advocate and resource for mentoring, MENTOR has established a vital infrastructure of mentoring partnerships serving 27 States. Each of these organizations is a bipartisan, collaborative effort of public- and private-sector leaders that serves as “mentoring central” for its community or State.

MENTOR provides the following: leadership and support to those who are working to expand quality mentoring, national guidelines for developing responsible mentoring programs in any setting, the National Mentoring Opportunities Database of more than 4,300 programs offering mentoring opportunities, and a Web site for immediate access to the latest mentoring resources. To access the latest in mentoring and volunteer opportunities in your community, visit www.mentoring.org.

MENTOR is committed to promoting the ¡Soy Unica! ¡Soy Latina! materials and Web articles through its network of mentoring partnerships and it's Web site, Mentoring.org. ¡Soy Unica! ¡Soy Latina! is providing technical assistance to MENTOR as they develop new content and resources for Hispanic/Latino audiences on Mentoring.org.

The National Hispana Leadership Institute (NHLI)

The National Hispana Leadership Institute (NHLI) is a comprehensive leadership institute whose mission is to develop Hispanas as ethical world leaders through training, professional development, relationship building, and community and world activism. Through the development of individuals, NHLI seeks to develop communities.

NHLI teaches different ways to lead in a participatory, collaborative, and nontraditional manner by showing participants how to support each other and how to cultivate new insights and skills.

NHLI has used ¡Soy Unica! ¡Soy Latina! activity books in their mentoring program with young Latinas, and ¡Soy Unica! staff have participated in their trainings and award ceremonies.

The National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA) was organized in 1994 to address the interests and concerns of 26,000 licensed physicians and 1,800 full-time Hispanic medical faculty dedicated to teaching medical and health services research.

NHMA provides policymakers and health care providers with expert information and support in strengthening health service delivery to Hispanic communities across the Nation.

NHMA contributed exhibit space and a full-page announcement in their program at their national conference so we could introduce ¡Soy Unica! ¡Soy Latina! to their members.
