Community Bridges Jump Start Girls! ¡Adelante Niñas! program
Who They Are
Jump Start Girls! ¡Adelante Niñas! is a multicultural empowerment and
leadership development program for girls ages 9 to 15, run by Community Bridges, a
non-profit organization in Silver Spring, MD.
Their Mission
To assist each girl in reaching the highest academic achievement possible, gain excellent interpersonal skills, develop academic and career aspirations, and become an engaged member of the community.
What They Do
They support the tremendous potential and resilience of girls who are faced with daily challenges to their well-being and who must negotiate two languages and cultures. They help the girls gain a true respect for themselves and their environment, recognize their potential and resources, and seek to better our community.
How They Do It
They make a difference by:
-
providing community action projects and leadership activities
-
supporting girls and their parents during the important transition from childhood to adolescence
-
providing bilingual staff to facilitate relationships between parents and school personnel
-
conducting mother/daughter workshops on safety, prevention, cultural expression, and adolescent development
-
providing talented female mentors and role models.
How ¡Soy Unica! ¡Soy Latina! Helped
The ¡Soy Unica! ¡Soy Latina! initiative provides free bilingual materials that address the feelings and challenges of the girls. The girls take great pride in having materials that were developed especially for them. The Soy Unica book Grandma's Wisdom is especially helpful for the mother/daughter programs, and the health communication messages in these materials support the goals of Jump Start Girls! ¡Adelante Niñas!-you are special, you are valuable to the world, and you can succeed!
