Community Spotlight is on:
CETPA, Inc. ¡Soy Unica! ¡Soy Latina! Afterschool Program
Mission:
CETPA is a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization dedicated to providing affordable, linguistic, and culturally appropriate substance abuse education, prevention, and counseling services to the Latino community.
Our vision is to make affordable substance abuse and mental health services available to clients in Georgia in a language they can understand. When addressing the issues surrounding substance abuse, addiction, and mental health, in cases involving limited English proficiency, we believe that cognitive learning is best done in the client's native language. CETPA provides services in Spanish for Spanish-speaking consumers; some services are also available in English.
Organization:
CETPA is the first Latino clinic to earn a license from the Georgia Department of Human Resources as an outpatient substance abuse treatment and education program. CETPA provides adult and adolescent treatment services to Latino families in Georgia. CETPA delivers culturally competent after-school substance abuse prevention programs to over 130 Latina girls in Georgia. Additionally, CETPA delivers summer camps for Latino youth.
Youth:
CETPA is the only agency in Georgia delivering bilingual, culturally competent after-school substance abuse prevention programs to Latino youth. Our program serves over 100 Latina girls between 8 and 14 years old and over 30 boys of the same age. We provide year round after-school programs that meet twice per week for 2 hours with the girls and at least four times per year with the parents. CETPA is preparing to become the only Latino Family Prevention Resource Center in Georgia.
Initiatives:
CETPA has created an after-school program for 9 to 14- year- old Hispanic girls using the Soy Unica workbooks. The girls spend part of the time in class and then get to learn how to dance salsa and merengue! This after-school activity offers girls the chance to learn about their heritage with other girls like them. Activities include: Dancing, giving a report on a Hispanic country, making a family tree, and other fun and exciting things.
