Community Spotlight is on:
City of Beaumont Public Health Department:
Health Promotion, Peer Empowerment, Tobacco Prevention Program
Mission:
Our mission is to provide our community with quality service through courteous and dedicated employees, working together for a better Beaumont. The City of Beaumont Public Health Department offers services that include presenting health education and prevention information and materials to the community.
Organization:
The City of Beaumont Public Health Department is a public entity providing health education, prevention, and materials for persons who may not have access to them through regular outlets. We offer our community tobacco prevention, peer empowerment, sexually transmitted disease (STD) testing, environmental health, and animal control.
Youth:
We help the youth of Beaumont by offering educational information about various health topics at schools, day cares, and health fairs. Information about cholesterol, high blood pressure, weight gain and loss, teen pregnancy, STDs, and HIV/AIDS is handed out to the public.
Initiatives:
The ¡Soy Unica! ¡Soy Latina! materials are written in English and Spanish, which allows our Hispanic community to better understand the information presented. An example of this is that more parents are willing to read the materials if they are also in Spanish. The "Girl That I Am" and "Who Am I?" books have proven to be excellent aids for self-esteem for both male and female youth. We distribute ¡Soy Unica! ¡Soy Latina! materials to Hispanic children and parents at health fairs, day cares, and schools.
