AtlantiCare Atlantic City Family Centers

Who They Are

AtlantiCare assists people in finding solutions to psychological, biological, and social problems. They have established an environment where clients, families, and staff members interact with mutual care and respect. They provide an integrated system of quality services that are responsive to community health needs. Their vision is to build healthy communities by providing high-quality behavioral health care and by developing innovative health care services.

What They Do

AtlantiCare is a school-based, nonprofit agency that provides educational, cultural, recreational, and behavioral health care (including psychological counseling, psycho-educational counseling) in addition to other services for children, youth, and their families. All of their services are free. Their clients reflect diverse cultures and religious orientations. Some of their special groups include the Grandparents & Kin Support Group for those raising other family member’s children, Dads Really Do Count Support for fathers, and Wise Guys and Girls Rule for adolescents, which provides self-esteem building, goal setting, cultural, and recreational activities for girls and guys between the ages of 9–17.

How They Do It

They provide services that include: mental health; substance abuse prevention; treatment and recovery; housing assistance; economic assistance; financial management and budgeting; after-school child care; summer camp; and support groups for women, men, children, and adolescents with emotional, social, and behavioral health issues in need of support. They also provide tutoring, ESL, and naturalization classes.

How ¡Soy Unica! ¡Soy Latina! Helps

SAMHSA’s ¡Soy Unica! ¡Soy Latina! materials have been especially helpful in the Grandparents & Kin Support Groups for Spanish-speaking clients. They also have a group specifically for Latina adolescents and teens, and they use the Web site (www.soyunica.gov) and materials on a monthly basis to supplement the curriculum for this group. The materials also are helpful in assisting staff members understand the cultural diversity of Latino clients as well as the rich heritage of the Latino culture.
